Builder View: Design Questions & Tensions

Each tradition surfaces specific design questions and tensions for AI systems. The six hexagon traditions (marked Hexagon) have dedicated deep-dive pages with extended analysis.

How to Use This Tool

This explorer is designed for researchers, builders, and policymakers who want to move beyond a single cultural framework for thinking about AI wellbeing. Each tradition offers not just a different answer but a different question β€” what counts as wellbeing, whose wellbeing matters, and how it should be pursued.

The dimension mappings are interpretive, not exhaustive. A tradition may speak to a dimension in ways not captured here, and the mappings will evolve as the field develops. We invite your feedback on these mappings.

Six Dimensions of AI Wellbeing

These dimensions, drawn from the AI Wellbeing Charter, provide a common vocabulary for assessing AI system welfare across cultural contexts:

Why Cross-Cultural?

AI systems are deployed globally, but the concept of "wellbeing" is not universal. What counts as flourishing, who can flourish, and how flourishing should be pursued are questions that different philosophical traditions answer differently. An AI wellbeing framework that ignores this plurality risks imposing a single cultural perspective on a global technology.

This explorer builds on the Cross-Cultural Perspectives page, which provides the full text for each tradition. Use this tool to navigate, filter, and compare β€” then read the full entries for depth.
